Helpful Tips

The Buckeye Blitz event coincides with a few other Buckeye Kayak Fishing Trail tournaments, so be sure to double, triple or quadruple dip and submit fish across multiple tournaments!

  • While bass are the primary target for Buckeye Blitz often times trophy sized Crappie are by-catches.  Don't overlook signing up for a small $16 registration fee for the year long Multi-Species Series event YAK-Ohio. A trophy crappie will win a decent pay off for only $16 and you have 7 other months to chase other species as well!  The only catch is that you have to get signed up early...as YAK-Ohio registration closes on April 16th.

  • Bass caught for this tournament can also be submitted to the Season Long Black Bass (Largemouth, Smallmouth, Spotted Bass) which begins on April 1st and runs until October 2nd.  You must register prior to May 1st at 11:59PM, so don't wait!

  • Anglers who plan on fishing for Smallmouth Bass during this event can also submit their bass to the Smallmouth only Season Long Smallmouth Bass tournament that runs from April 1st until October 2nd.  Register early because entries will not be accepted after 11:59PM on May 1st.

Event Rules

Standard rules for this event can be found HERE

Remember, new for 2021, acceptable measuring boards are the aluminum Ketch Products Measuring Board, the Ketch Karbonate and the Ketch X measuring board.  The Hawg Trough and Fish Stix boards are no longer an acceptable measuring board.

Additional Rules for this tournament...

  • Anglers must compete in at least 1 Tour Series event to be eligible for a payout.

  • The tournament runs from 6AM on May 28 until 10PM on May 31st.

  • It is the anglers responsibility to upload eligible photos by the May 31st, 10PM deadline.

  • This tournament is black bass only (Largemouth, Smallmouth, Spotted).

  • This tournament is a multiple day event where a 5 fish total length determines final standings.

  • Since we expect some true Ohio trophies caught during this tournament we HIGLHLY ENCOURAGE anglers to not only upload their fish submission to Tourney X, but a 2nd photo of the angler holding the fish!  Enter the measurement at 1" and you will either cull it or the judge will remove it, but we will download it and use it for social media, website, etc.

Eligible Water

  • At its most basic definition, eligible water is anything in Ohio that is accessible to everyone.  Accessible means it is legal, open to everyone, and does not require special permission.

  • Eligible water includes anything owned by the government (park system, city, township, county, state, federal, ODNR) where fishing from a kayak is permitted.  This also includes Ohio waterways designated as rivers or creeks.

  • Privately owned water is eligible under certain circumstances.  It must be accessible BY ANYONE without restricted passes, special permissions, deals, agreements, or backdoor handshakes from the owner.  Anyone should have access to fish the body of water.  For example a private community that requires a landowner or guest pass is ineligible.

  • NEW FOR 2021: Public and Private water that require permits are eligible if...

  • If there are unlimited permits that can be acquired the same day it is going to be fished.  For example, if a lake only offers 5 permits per day or a limited number of permits a day it is off limits.  If a lake offers multiple permits in a day but they have to be scheduled in advance of the day it is fished it is off limits.

  • We get asked several times a year if AEP is eligible water.  YES, AEP is eligible.  They offer unlimited permits the same day and anyone can obtain on HERE.  As for any other waterway AEP rules & regulations MUST be followed.

  • If you have a question about eligible water and a possible location don't hesitate to email buckeyekayakfishingtrail@gmail.com

  • All laws, rules, and regulations must be followed while fishing the body of water.  For example, if a body of water allows fishing only during daylight hours then any fish caught outside of that period would not be eligible and cause for immediate disqualification.

Note: Hawg Trough measuring boards are no longer allowed in 2020.  Please refer to the event rules on this page for an eligible measuring board.
